January 29, 2019

TAMPA BAY, FL. – A former Tampa Bay hockey captain was injured January 26 in a bus crash that occurred in Tampa Bay, Florida, according to a news story reported online at northwestgeorgianews.com. Three buses collided on a highway, causing injuries to several people. Two drivers were issued citations for the accident.*

The accident occurred sometime on January 26, but it is not clear what time. Three buses were traveling on a Florida highway carrying people who were scheduled to participate in the Tampa Gasparilla Pirate Invasion. The Gasparilla Pirate Invasion is a parade that takes place every year in the downtown waterfront of Tampa. It boasts an annual attendance of about 200,000 people.

For unknown reasons, the three buses collided on their way to the parade. It is not known which highway they were traveling on or how they came to crash into each other. It is not clear how many people were on board each bus. Several people were injured in the wreck, including a former Tampa Bay Lightning hockey player.

Emergency responders transported 38-year-old former center Vincent Lecavalier and two other men to a local hospital for treatment after the accident. Their injuries were reportedly minor. The other two injured passengers were not identified. Lecavalier spent 14 seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning and played in the NHL for a total of 17 seasons.

Florida Highway Patrol said two of the bus drivers were issued citations for careless or negligent driving. The drivers have not been identified. Officials reported that the collision caused a delay in the parade, but they did not say how long the parade was delayed.
