Two Killed, One Injured in Truck Collision in Centerville, Tennessee

CENTERVILLE, TN. – According to an online news report published at, two people were killed, and one person was injured January 24 in a truck collision in Centerville, Tennessee. The circumstances of the crash are not yet clear, but the names of the decedents have been released by officials.* 

At approximately 6:30 a.m. on January 24, a tanker truck was traveling westbound on Interstate 40 in Hickman County, Tennessee. The tanker, which normally carried motor oil, was empty at the time. For unknown reasons, the tanker truck left the roadway and crashed into a concrete barrier wall on the interstate. 

The tanker then crossed over the median and entered the eastbound lanes of the interstate, where it collided head-on with another truck. The second truck was reportedly carrying electronics, but a description of this truck was not released. It is not clear where on I-40 the collision occurred, as reports did not state an exit number or mile marker. It was not far from Centerville, according to reports.

The driver of the tanker truck sustained serious injuries and died at the scene. Officials have identified him as 58-year-old Johnny F. Smith, of Smyrna, Tennessee. The driver of the second truck also suffered serious injuries and died at the scene. Officials have identified him as 44-year-old Muriz Smajic, of Des Plaines, Illinois. 

A 21-year-old passenger in the truck was injured, and emergency crews transported him or her to an area hospital for treatment. The passenger’s name and current condition have not been released. Tennessee Highway Patrol is still trying to determine the cause of the crash.
