Atlanta Fire Department Gearing Up for Influx of Super Bowl Attendees

February 01, 2019

ATLANTA, GA. – The Atlanta Fire Department is gearing up for an influx of Super Bowl attendees, according to an online news report from Super Bowl LIII will be played in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 3, and the city is preparing for fans to start arriving.*

Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in Atlanta is already an extremely busy airport, and traffic coming into the city is about to grow exponentially. To prepare for the increase in travelers and to protect everyone at the airport, the Atlanta Fire Department is bringing on more members for its Mobile Medical Response Team.

Team members of the department’s Mobile Medical Response are EMTs and paramedics who respond to medical emergencies inside the airport on bicycles. Current and new members have started extensive training to be ready for a lot more travelers.

“We’re working 10 to 12 hours a day to get everyone trained up,” said Atlanta Fire Sgt. Mike Palmeri. “Today, we rode 21.5 miles. We can travel 14 to 16 mph on a bike, where[as] a golf cart is going about 7 mph. So we can get to the patients much faster.”

Each member is outfitted with a pack containing the supplies they need for medical emergencies, like blood pressure cuffs, IVs, and gauze. In the days remaining before the Super Bowl, they are training not only for endurance but also for agility. In the hustle and bustle of an airport, riding a bicycle can be difficult.

“It can get tricky when you have a lot of people,” said Atlanta Fire Sgt. Jelani Dunning. “Pedestrian traffic, you have to watch out for them.”
