FLORIDA – According to an online story reported at, Florida and Georgia are among the most dangerous places for pedestrians. An organization called Smart Growth America (SGA) found that Florida was the most dangerous state for pedestrians, and Georgia was in the top 10, based on the number of pedestrians killed by vehicles.*

In its Dangerous by Design 2019 report, SGA reviewed the number of pedestrian collisions from 2008 to 2017 across the United States. During that time span, vehicles hit and killed more than 49,000 people in the country. This equates to 13 pedestrian deaths every day. The years 2016 and 2017 saw the highest number of pedestrian fatalities since 1990.

Florida had the highest share of pedestrian deaths from 2008 to 2017, and six metro areas in Florida were designated the most dangerous places to walk in the country. In order after Florida, the remaining states in the top 10 most dangerous for pedestrians were Alabama, Delaware, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, and South Carolina.

“We’re not walking more, and we’re only driving slightly more than we were back in 2008,” SGA says. “Yes even as driving got safer from 2008 to 2017, significantly more people walking were struck and killed. This is happening because our streets, which we designed for the movement of vehicles, have not changed. In fact, we are continuing to design streets that are more dangerous for all people.”

SGA goes on to say, “[F]ederal and state policies, standards, and funding mechanisms still produce roads that prioritize high speed for cars over safety for all people. To reverse this trend and save lives, we need to protect all users of the transportation system through our policies, programs, and funding.”
