January 28, 2019

COCOA, FL. – An author and martial arts instructor was killed by a drunk driver January 22 in Cocoa, Florida, according to an online news report from thelcn.com. The driver struck the man on State Road 520 and then fled the scene. Authorities apprehended the driver less than an hour after the collision.*

At approximately 12:15 a.m., a vehicle traveling on State Road 520 in Cocoa hit 56-year-old Bruce D. Calkins near Varr Avenue. It is not clear if Calkins, a resident of Rockledge, Florida, was walking on the side of the road or was trying to cross the road. No information was reported about why he was in the roadway.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop and left the scene. Calkins did not survive his injuries. A witness reportedly discovered his body near the crash site and contacted authorities. Police arrived at the scene and found the bumper to a black vehicle lying in the east lanes of State Road 520.

Police immediately began looking for the missing vehicle and driver. Close to 1 a.m. that day, a Brevard County Sheriff’s deputy observed 33-year-old Jacqueice Witcher, of Titusville, Florida, driving a black Honda Accord with a missing bumper. The deputy stopped Witcher in Titusville on U.S. Highway 1 and State Road 405.

Investigators found that the bumper from the scene matched Witcher’s Honda. Authorities arrested Witcher and charged her with driving under the influence. Additional charges could be added upon completion of the accident investigation.

Calkins was the owner of Golden Dragon Dojo in Florida and the author of “The Essence of Martial Arts: A Way of Life.”
