Georgia Police Department Awarded State Grant for Car Seat Program

January 26, 2019

CALHOUN, GA. – According to a news story reported online at, the Calhoun Police Department in Calhoun, Georgia, has been awarded a state grant for a car seat program. The program will fund car seats and education to families in need in the area.*

The Georgia Department of Public Health awarded the 2019 Car Seat Mini-Grant to the Calhoun Police Department to provide car seats and valuable education about car seat safety to families in Calhoun and Gordon County, Georgia. The program will be a partnership with the police department and Georgia State Patrol, Safe Kids Dalton, the Calhoun Fire Department, the Gordon County Fire Department, and Gordon EMS.

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has supplied this funding every year since 2007 to help reduce child fatalities in vehicle accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says car seats can reduce crash fatalities by 71 percent for children under age 1 and by 54 percent for children between the ages of 1 and 4.

Officials in Georgia estimate that since the Car Seat Mini-Grant’s inception, its efforts have saved the lives of 300 children involved in vehicle accidents. The education in particular has helped parents in Georgia keep their children safe, as national reports show that about 75 percent of all car seats are not installed properly.

“It’s our responsibility to keep our children safe,” said Police Chief Tony Pyle. “The Car Seat Mini-Grant is a great opportunity to help our community and help protect our children from serious injuries or death in motor vehicle accidents.”
