Driver Charged for Fatal Vehicle Collision in Surf City, North Carolina

SURF CITY, NC. – According to an online news report posted at, a driver has been criminally charged after a fatal vehicle collision that occurred January 20 in Surf City, North Carolina. The 23-year-old driver has been charged with felony death by vehicle and driving while intoxicated, among other crimes.*

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on January 20, 23-year-old James Coleman Thomason, of Topsail Beach, North Carolina, was driving south on North New River Drive in Surf City. The make and model of Thomason’s vehicle were not reported. In the 1600 block of the roadway, it appears he attempted to pass another southbound vehicle and collided with this vehicle. The make and model of the second vehicle were also not reported.

The second vehicle then veered off the road, rolled onto its side, and caught on fire. The driver of the vehicle and a passenger inside suffered critical injuries, and officials pronounced them dead at the scene of the accident. Neither has been identified, as officials are still trying to notify next-of-kin for both victims. 

Thomason was seriously injured in the wreck, and an ambulance crew took him to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. After receiving medical treatment, he was transferred to police custody upon charges of felony death by vehicle, driving while intoxicated, possession of an open container, improper passing, reckless driving, driving left of center, exceeding the speed limit, and failure to reduce speed.

Thomason’s bond was set at $100,000, and he was scheduled for a court hearing on January 22. No additional information has been reported at this time.
