4-Year-Old Child Hit by Car in Americus, Georgia

January 27, 2019

AMERICUS, GA. – A 4-year-old child was hit by a vehicle January 17 in Americus, Georgia, according to an online news report from The child was injured, as was the driver of the vehicle. Neither has been identified at this time.*

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on January 17, a vehicle traveling on Masonic Street in Americus hit a 4-year-old child. The driver of the vehicle, who has not been identified, stopped after the collision and got out of her car to see if the child was ok. However, she failed to place her vehicle in park, and when she got out, the vehicle rolled backward. The vehicle rolled over the driver’s leg and then crashed into a utility pole.

Police arrived at the scene and found the child with no visible injuries. An ambulance crew transported him to Phoebe Sumter, where he was then reportedly airlifted to another hospital. The child’s current medical condition is not known, and his name has not been released.

The driver complained of leg pain but declined treatment beyond the scene. She reportedly told officers that she did not see the boy before the crash. Police said they did not anticipate charges, as it appeared the collision was an accident.

The mother of the 4-year-old boy, who has also not been identified, told officers that she had let her son outside to play but did not realize he had wandered away from the house. The collision occurred about a block from where they live.

Police said drivers and parents need to be especially careful around children and residential neighborhoods because small children are difficult to see.
