January 25, 2019

ATLANTA, GA. – A 20-year-old Georgia college student was killed January 17 in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 in Atlanta, Georgia, according to an online news story reported at redandblack.com. The at-fault driver has been criminally charged in connection with the crash and the student’s death.*

The crash happened on the evening of January 17. A tractor-trailer traveling east on I-20 somehow overturned near Fulton Industrial Boulevard in Atlanta. The driver reportedly lost control and hit another eastbound tractor-trailer and two eastbound cars after overturning on the interstate.

The first tractor-trailer then continued moving while still on its side and crashed through a concrete barrier wall in the middle of the interstate. This collision caused debris to fly into the westbound lanes of I-20, and pieces of debris hit two westbound vehicles.

According to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, 20-year-old William Whitaker, of Carrollton, Georgia, was the driver of one of the vehicles struck by debris. Whitaker died at the scene. He was a sophomore at the University of Georgia, majoring in exercise science and athletic training.

The driver of the first tractor-trailer was identified as 53-year-old Mario Polier, of Hialeah, Florida. Polier was injured in the crash and transported to a local hospital for treatment. He has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide (a misdemeanor), making an improper/erratic lane change while driving, and driving or following too closely.

Reports did not indicate whether anyone else involved in the crash was injured. The accident is still under investigation, and no further details have been released.
