Weather Conditions Lead to Death of Georgia Man in Virginia Vehicle Crash

January 21, 2019

PULASKI COUNTY, VA. – As reported in an online news story posted at wsls.com, a person from Georgia died January 12 in a weather-related vehicle accident in Pulaski County, Virginia. A winter storm caused snowy, wet, and icy conditions in the U.S. during the weekend, resulting in numerous traffic accidents.*

The crash occurred on January 12 at mile marker 89 on Interstate 81 in Pulaski County. At approximately 8:50 p.m., 73-year-old Ronald W. Harris, of Gainesville, Georgia, was driving a military truck — a 1991 Oshkosh M1074 — south on I-81. At mile marker 89, Harris reportedly lost control of the truck and collided with two tractor-trailers that were also traveling south.

Harris’s truck traveled into the median, as did one of the tractor-trailers. The second tractor-trailer traveled through the median and crashed through a guardrail. This tractor-trailer then drove through the northbound lanes of the interstate and struck a fence.

Officials responding to the accident pronounced Harris dead at the scene. The drivers of both tractor-trailers sustained non-life threatening injuries, and emergency crews transported them to a nearby hospital for treatment. They have not been identified. No information was reported about the makes or models of the two tractor-trailers or whether these drivers were working for commercial carriers.

Based on preliminary investigation, authorities believe the accident was weather-related. Officers believe Harris lost control of his truck because of slick roadways, which caused the subsequent collisions. However, the accident is still under investigation. It does not appear at this time that any charges will be filed. No further information has been released at this time.
