Winter Storm Causes Numerous Fatalities from Midwest to Mid-Atlantic Regions

January 21, 2019

UNITED STATES – According to an online news report from time.com, a severe winter storm caused several fatalities leading up to and during the weekend of January 12. The storm started in the Midwest and moved to the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., leaving tragedy in its wake.*

The storm produced several inches of snow in the Midwest, and conditions led to numerous traffic accidents. In Illinois, a state trooper was killed in a vehicle crash while he was responding to the scene of a multi-vehicle accident. Trooper Christopher Lambert, 34, pulled over and positioned his car to protect the three wrecked vehicles. He was then struck by a car and killed. Reports indicate the fatal wreck was due to the weather.

As the storm moved into the mid-Atlantic area, airports in Virginia and North Carolina canceled hundreds of flights. The three airports in the D.C. area canceled more than 250 flights. Around 200,000 people in North Carolina and Virginia lost power.

Virginia State Police said they responded to around 230 vehicle accidents in about 12 hours on January 13. In addition, they assisted more than 100 drivers whose vehicles became disabled in the snow during the same 12-hour period from midnight to noon on January 13.

Some of the accidents were fatal. One such weather-related fatal accident occurred on Interstate 81 in Virginia. Virginia State Police said a military surplus vehicle collided with two semi-trucks because of slick road conditions. The driver of the military truck, 73-year-old Ronald W. Harris, of Gainesville, Georgia, died in the wreck. The drivers of the two semi-trucks were injured.
