Georgia Man Killed in Three-Vehicle Wreck on I-81 in Virginia

January 21, 2019

PULASKI COUNTY, VA. – An online news story from wdbj7.com reports that a man from Georgia was killed January 12 in a three-vehicle wreck on Interstate 81 in Pulaski County, Virginia. The man was reportedly driving a military vehicle and collided with two tractor-trailers because of slick road conditions.*

In the late evening on January 12, shortly before 9 p.m., a 1991 Oshkosh M1074 (a military surplus vehicle) was traveling southbound on I-81. Near the Lee Highway/Wysor Exit of the interstate, around mile marker 89, the driver of the Oshkosh truck encountered slippery road conditions and lost control. Two southbound tractor-trailers then hit the truck.

The impact caused the Oshkosh truck and one of the tractor-trailers to veer into the median of the interstate. The crash also sent the tractor-trailer into the median, but this vehicle traveled through the median and struck a guardrail, then went into the northbound lanes and crashed into a fence.

The driver of the Oshkosh truck was critically injured in the crash and did not survive his injuries. Officials responding to the accident pronounced him deceased at the scene. He has been identified as 73-year-old Ronald W. Harris, of Gainesville, Georgia.

The tractor-trailer drivers have not been identified at this time. They were both injured and taken to a local hospital. Reports indicated their injuries were not life-threatening.

Several emergency agencies responded to the scene. The Wytheville Division Crash Reconstruction Team of the Virginia State Police is investigating the crash. Police have not yet reported additional details about this crash.
