Police in Hinesville, Georgia, Stressing Safety After Bicyclist Fatality

A motor vehicle hit a bicyclist in Hinesville, and the collision claimed the life of the bicyclist. Police say it is a reminder about how careful people need to be on the roads and how easily poor decisions can turn tragic.

In 2018, according to figures tallied so far, the Hinesville Police Department responded to almost 1,400 traffic accidents. A small percentage of these involved pedestrians and bicyclists. Thirteen of the accidents involved a vehicle hitting a pedestrian, and 15 of them involved a vehicle hitting a bicyclist. Though they occur infrequently, these types of accidents can turn deadly quickly, as pedestrians and cyclists do not have the benefit of a vehicle’s protection.

The most recent accident involving a bicyclist is still under investigation by police, but it already appears from initial review of the case that the bicyclist was following proper safety measures.

“He [had] lights on his bicycle,” said Michael Ramirez, of the Hinesville Police Department. “They were tested, but right now, we are still looking at that. And the bicyclist was wearing a gray jacket and khaki pants.”

Different precautions need to be taken by everyone on the road at night, police say. Drivers need to be extra cautious and look out for other people, and pedestrians and bicyclists need to do whatever they can to make themselves visible.
