Vehicle Wreck Shuts Down I-20 in Augusta, Georgia

January 19, 2019

AUGUSTA, GA. – According to an online news report from wjbf.com, a vehicle wreck on January 13 shut down Interstate 20 in Augusta, Georgia. Little information about the wreck has been reported by Georgia officials at this time.*

The accident occurred sometime in the evening on January 13, but reports did not say exactly what time. At some point before 6 p.m., a wreck happened on Interstate 20 East in Augusta.

Reports did not indicate how the accident happened or describe any circumstances surrounding the accident. No information was reported about the vehicles involved. The accident might have occurred across the state line in South Carolina, but this information has not been confirmed.

Officials did not say whether the accident injured anyone, and it is not clear how many people were involved. The wreck caused part of the interstate to shut down, and eventually, crews had to close the entire eastbound section of I-20. This caused traffic in the area to slow considerably and then to come to a complete stop. Officials were encouraging drivers to avoid the area if they could.

At about 6 p.m., North Augusta Public Safety posted a message to social media, saying, “Avoid Interstate 20 eastbound between exit 1 and 5. South Carolina Highway Patrol is out with a[n] accident and they expect delays for several hours.”

Later, North Augusta Public Safety posted another message on social media, saying, “Update: The Interstate has been shut down at exit 1. Please avoid the area and find an alternate route.”

Authorities are still investigating the collision and have not yet released additional information.
