Michigan Family Dies in Wreck Coming Back from Florida Vacation

January 19, 2019

LEXINGTON, KY. – As reported in a news story published online at, a family from Michigan died in a head-on vehicle wreck while they were coming back home from a Florida vacation. The crash occurred on January 6 on Interstate 75 in Kentucky.*

At about 2:30 p.m. on January 6, 41-year-old Joey Lee Bailey, of Georgetown, Kentucky, was driving a pickup truck the wrong way on I-75 in Lexington, Kentucky. Bailey was driving south in the northbound lanes of I-75 and suddenly crashed into a northbound SUV head-on. After impact, the SUV ignited into flames.

The makes and models of the two vehicles were not reported, and it is still not clear why Bailey was traveling in the wrong lanes of the interstate. A statement from the Fayette County Coroner’s Office said authorities investigating the case suspected Bailey was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A toxicology analysis was planned, the results of which are still pending.

Bailey died in the wreck. The five family members in the SUV all died in the wreck, as well. Reports say they were from Northville, Michigan, and were passing through Kentucky on their drive back home from a trip to Florida.

The county coroner’s office released the names of the five family members: 42-year-old Issam Abbas; 41-year-old Ali Abbas; 38-year-old Rima Abbas; a 13-year-old child; and a 7-year-old child. The children’s names were also released but have been withheld from this story.

Habib Abbas, who said he was a cousin to one of the family members, said he was in shock when he learned of the collision.

“You don’t expect a whole family to get wiped out,” he said. “You think to yourself, ‘What’s the worst case scenario?’ And that’s it.”
