Two Killed in Moped Crash in Clinton, South Carolina

January 19, 2019

CLINTON, SC. – Two people were killed January 16 in a moped crash in Clinton, South Carolina, according to an online news story published at charlotteobserver.com. The victims have been identified, but the circumstances of the accident are not completely clear at this time.*

The crash occurred on the evening of January 16, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol. It is not clear what road the crash occurred on, but reports say it took place in Clinton. Troopers say at about 6:30 p.m., a vehicle ran into the back of a moped. The make and model of the vehicle was not reported, and no description of the moped was provided.

It is not clear what caused the driver of the car to rear-end the moped. Troopers did not say whether the moped had working lights and did not provide any information about potential factors that might have played a role in the collision.

Two people were on the moped at the time of accident, and both were critically injured. The Laurens County Coroner’s Office pronounced them dead at the scene. Laurens County Deputy Chief Coroner Vickie Cheek identified the victims as 34-year-old Aaron Bates, of Clinton, and 31-year-old Brittaney Redd, also of Clinton. Troopers said neither Bates nor Redd was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the car has not been identified and was reportedly not injured in the accident. It is not yet clear if the driver will be cited or charged in connection with the collision and the two deaths. South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating and has not released additional information at this time.
