City of Atlanta Settles Case with Woman Involved in Police Crash
ATLANTA, GA. – The City of Atlanta has settled a civil case with a woman who was involved in a crash with a police vehicle in February 2018, according to an online news story reported at fox5atlanta.com. The woman’s arm had to be amputated as a result of the crash, and the officer was eventually suspended.*
In February 2018, Officer Dejoira Phillips was responding to a call and driving on Ralph Abernathy Boulevard in Atlanta. It is not clear what type of call Phillips was responding to at the time. Phillips had her emergency lights and siren activated and drove through the intersection with Peeples Street on a red light. At the intersection, Phillips crashed into the passenger’s side of another vehicle.
The driver of the second vehicle was Lisa Williams. Emergency responders transported both Williams and Phillips to a nearby hospital, and doctors had to perform an amputation of Williams’s left arm due to her injuries.
Williams filed a civil lawsuit against the City of Atlanta, and prosecutors pursued a criminal case against Phillips. Williams testified to a grand jury on January 9, and the grand jury indicted Phillips. The Atlanta Police Department suspended Phillips the next day. Before the grand jury hearing, Phillips was still a member of the force.
On January 15, the Atlanta City Council’s Public Safety Commission approved a settlement in Williams’s civil case. The City agreed to pay $500,000 to resolve her civil claims. The criminal matter is ongoing, and investigation into the case continues. No additional information has been released at this time.
