Vehicle Hits Pedestrian on University of Georgia Campus

January 19, 2019

ATHENS, GA. – A vehicle struck and injured a pedestrian January 11 on the University of Georgia campus, according to an online news story reported at redandblack.com. The pedestrian has not yet been identified, but police believe he or she was at fault in the collision, rather than the driver of the vehicle.*

At about 10 p.m. on January 11, a vehicle was traveling north on Lumpkin Street on the University of Georgia Campus in Athens, Georgia. A description of the vehicle was not released. Near Myers Hall, at the intersection of Lumpkin Street and University Court, the vehicle struck a pedestrian who was walking across the road.

The driver of the vehicle, who has not been identified, and witnesses at the scene told University of Georgia Police that the pedestrian started into a road on a “do not walk” signal, and the light for the driver was green at the time. The pedestrian was injured and transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment. The pedestrian’s name has not been released, and the extent of his or her injuries was not reported.

The driver’s vehicle had damage to the bumper, the hood, the fender, and the roof after the accident. The windshield of the car also caved in during impact. Officers at the scene believed from preliminary investigation that the pedestrian was at fault in the collision. Given that the driver’s light appeared to be green, and the pedestrian was walking against the crosswalk signal, officers did not immediately issue a citation to the driver.

The crash is still under investigation by University Police, and no further information has been released at this time.
