15-Year-Old Student Struck by Vehicle While Leaving School in Adel, Georgia

January 16, 2019

ADEL, GA. – According to an online news story from, a 15-year-old student was struck by a vehicle while he was walking home from school. The teen sustained multiple injuries and was hospitalized.*

A 15-year-old student of Cook High School was walking home on a side street off of Highway 37. The street is an access road for students parking at the high school on Josey Road. The student walked between two cars and was struck by a pickup truck that was apparently trying to pass slowed traffic.

Witnesses say the truck ran over the teen’s leg. The boy sustained numerous injuries, including a severe concussion, broken leg, broken ankle, broken teeth, scrapes and lacerations. He was transported to South Georgia Medical Center, where his mother, Angie Pennington Powell, reported he had undergone surgery to repair his leg and ankle and needed several more procedures. The boy’s name has been released but withheld from this story for privacy reasons.

The driver of the pickup truck has not been identified. It is not yet clear whether he or she is also a student of the high school or whether he or she will be charged in connection with the incident. Powell says these types of accidents are prevalent in the area of the school, and she wants students to use more caution.

“About four years ago, when my other son was a senior at CHS, he got rear-ended pretty much at the same spot…,” Powell said. “It totaled out three vehicles. I went to school to discuss what could be done then to slow these kids down but was told there was nothing they could do because it’s a county road. His father and I want to see something happen to slow down student drivers leaving the school.”
