According to a report from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the United States have been rising at an alarming rate. Pedestrian deaths have risen substantially faster than other types of traffic deaths, increasing by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. In 2007, pedestrian deaths accounted for 11 percent of all traffic fatalities in the U.S., and by 2016, that figure rose to 16 percent. Pedestrians are dying in higher numbers in traffic accidents today than at any other time in 33 years.

The report provides state-specific data, which shows that in 2016, Florida had a pedestrian fatality rate of 3.22 per every 100,000 people. New Mexico had the highest pedestrian fatality rate at 3.45 per 100,000, and Nebraska had the lowest rate at 0.68 per 100,000.
