Car Hits Two Pedestrians in Savannah, Georgia
SAVANNAH, GA. – According to an online news story from wsav.com, a car hit two pedestrians in Savannah, Georgia. Both pedestrians were injured and hospitalized.*
According to Savannah Police, 29-year-old Benjamin Schoefield, of Atlanta, Georgia, and 29-year-old Andreina Icaza, of Atlanta, were walking across Liberty Street on Barnard Street in downtown Savannah. A Honda Accord traveling southbound on Barnard Street stopped at a stop sign in the median and made a left turn on Liberty Street, hitting the two pedestrians.
Schoefield and Icaza both suffered injuries and were transported to Memorial Medical Center for treatment. Icaza reportedly suffered minor injuries, and Schoefield suffered serious injuries. Their current medical conditions were not reported.
The driver of the Honda, identified only as a 29-year-old resident of Savannah, was not injured. It is not clear whether the driver will be charged or cited for the incident. Police are still investigating and have not yet released additional information.
This year, the pedestrian advocacy group PEDS released a draft report entitled the Georgia Pedestrian Safety Action Plan, designed to “provide guidance on pedestrian safety issues to the Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia Department of Public Health, Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, law enforcement agencies, pedestrian safety advocates, local and regional agencies, and others.”
According to the PEDS report, pedestrian fatalities and injuries are a “serious and growing problem in Georgia,” with more than 17,000 vehicle-pedestrian crashes occurring in the state between 2011 and 2015. The report states that about 44 percent of pedestrian accidents in Georgia occur on state-owned arterial roads, with 5 percent of these accidents resulting in the death of the pedestrian.
