BROKEN LINK Driver Who Crashes Over Curb in Athens, Georgia Arrested for Open Container

January 11, 2019

ATHENS, GA. – A driver who crashed over a curb January 6 in Athens, Georgia was later arrested by police for an open container, according to an online news report from He was also arrested for driving without a driver’s license.*

The incident occurred late in the evening on January 6, though reports did not say exactly what time. A man was driving on West Broad Street in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, and drove up over a curb on Timothy Park Lane. It is not entirely clear what caused the driver to crash over the curb. He told police that he did not see the curb.

No one was injured in the incident, but both tires on the passenger’s side of the vehicle were flattened. The make and model of the vehicle was not reported. During their preliminary investigation, Athens-Clarke County Police officers learned the driver was not the owner of the vehicle, and he did not have a driver’s license. He has been identified only as a 25-year-old man.

Police searched the vehicle and found a 40 ounce beer in the back seat, within the driver’s grasp, that was open and half-full. They also found a dollar bill that appeared to have a white, powdery substance on it. There was not enough of the substance to test, but the driver admitted to police that he had a problem with methamphetamines.

In addition, officers retrieved a loaded gun from underneath the driver’s seat of the car. The driver denied owning the gun, as did a passenger who had been in the vehicle. The owner of the vehicle came to the scene and also denied ownership of the gun.

Police seized the gun and placed the driver under arrest for driving without a license and possession of an open container of alcohol. No additional information was reported.
