One Person Killed in Rear-End Collision in DeKalb County, Georgia

January 12, 2019

DEKALB COUNTY, GA. – One person was killed in a rear-end collision that occurred January 5 in DeKalb County, Georgia, according to an online news report from wsbtv.com. The circumstances of the crash are not completely clear, but it appears one of the vehicles had stopped on Interstate 20 before being hit from behind.*

The crash occurred in the early morning hours of January 5 on Interstate 20 East. At approximately 1 a.m., a vehicle was stopped in one of the eastbound lanes of the interstate in DeKalb County. It appears the vehicle was stopped near Candler Road. Authorities did not indicate whether the vehicle stopped because of car trouble or whether the driver of the vehicle stopped for another reason.

As the vehicle sat in one of the I-20 lanes, another vehicle traveling east struck it from behind. The makes and models of the vehicles were not reported. Sgt. J.D. Spencer with the DeKalb County Police Department said the second driver was not able to brake in time to avoid the rear-end collision, and that the crash occurred at a “high rate of speed.”

The driver of the first vehicle sustained critical injuries and died at the scene. He or she has not been identified at this time. The driver of the second vehicle has also not been identified. It is not clear whether this driver was injured in the crash.

DeKalb County Police are still investigating the wreck and have not reported further information at this time. It does not appear at this time that charges are expected to be filed against the second driver.
