Multiple Wrecks Block Traffic on I-95 at Georgia-South Carolina Border

January 11, 2019

GEORGIA – As reported online by, multiple wrecks occurred on Interstate 95 near the border of Georgia and South Carolina. The wrecks resulted in numerous hours of traffic delays on the interstate and affected travel for people in both states.*

The first collision was reported around 11 a.m. on January 2 on I-95 South. This crash occurred on the South Carolina side of the border, about one mile from the border itself. South Carolina Highway Patrol said three vehicles somehow collided. The three vehicles were a tractor-trailer, a Honda Pilot, and a Ford Expedition. The nature of the crash was not reported.

Officials also did not released a cause for the crash but said no one was injured. All of the southbound lanes of I-95 were initially closed after the wreck, and one lane reopened shortly after noon. The Georgia Department of Transportation reported during this time that traffic was backing up across the border and onto northbound I-95 for several miles.

Not long after a lane reopened from the first wreck, a second wreck occurred on I-95 South in the area of Ridgeland, South Carolina. No details were immediately reported about this crash, including the vehicles involved or whether anyone was injured. No information was reported about the cause of this crash, either.

The second wreck did not result in any additional lanes closing but did contribute to already slow traffic on the interstate. Drivers reported bumper-to-bumper traffic across the state border and in both directions for several hours. Part of the congestion was due to people traveling for the holidays, including New Year’s Day.
