Two-Vehicle DUI Crash in Florida Leaves One Dead, Three Injured
MARION COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news report from news4jax.com, a two-vehicle crash in Marion County, Florida, left one person dead and three injured. Authorities say the crash was alcohol-related.*
A vehicle traveling southbound on U.S. 441 ran a red light at the intersection with SE 80th Street. The vehicle then collided with another vehicle that was traveling westbound on SE 80th Street.
The vehicle that ran the light left the roadway after the crash and overturned. The driver of this vehicle, 53-year-old Douglas Williams, of Brookesville, Florida, and a passenger inside, who has not been identified, were transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center with injuries. Williams is said to be in critical condition, and the passenger reportedly has serious injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle died at the scene. A passenger in this vehicle was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center with critical injuries. Neither has been identified. Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident but has determined that alcohol was a factor.
In 2017, the rate of drunk driving fatalities in the United States was 3.3 per 100,000 population, according to a report from responsibility.org. This figure represents a 64 percent decline since 1982, when record-keeping first began. It also represents a 47 percent decrease since 1991, when The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility was founded.
While the decreases are indicative of progress in the fight against drunk driving, more work needs to be done. Drunk driving accidents still accounted for almost 30 percent of all traffic fatalities in the United States in 2017. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that more than 10,874 people died in 2017 in alcohol-related crashes. Sixty-seven percent of those crashes involved drivers with BACs of .15 or greater (nearly double the legal limit).
