January 06, 2019

PASCO COUNTY, FL. – One person was killed and two people were seriously injured in a head-on collision on State Road 52 in Pasco County, Florida, according to an online news report from tbreporter.com.*

64-year-old Dominic Valentino, of New Port Richey, Florida, was driving a 2015 Ford F-150 westbound on State Road 52 in Pasco County. Near Zimmerman Road, an eastbound 1999 Toyota Rav4 crossed over the centerline of the roadway and struck Valentino’s F-150 head-on.

Valentino was seriously injured and transported to the Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point for treatment. A passenger in his F-150, 63-year-old Denise Valentino, of New Port Richey, was also seriously injured and transported to Bayonet Point. Their current medical conditions are not known.

The driver of the Toyota, 60-year-old Gerald Leon Sellas, was critically injured and transported to Bayonet Point, where he was pronounced dead. It does not appear anyone else was in the Toyota at the time of the crash.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and has not yet determined why Sellas crossed over the centerline. No additional information has been reported at this time.

According to recent reports, head-on vehicle collisions make up a small percentage of all the traffic accidents that occur every year in the United States. However, they account for a significant percentage of annual fatal collisions in the country. Only 2 percent of all annual U.S. traffic collisions involve head-on collisions, but they cause about 10 percent of annual crash-related deaths in the nation. The impact angle and force of these crashes causes them to be more fatal and lead to more serious injuries than other kinds of traffic collisions.
