Child in Critical Condition After Distracted Driving Wreck in Savannah, Georgia

SAVANNAH, GA. – According to an online news report from wtoc.com, a child is in critical condition after a distracted driving wreck that occurred on Interstate 95 in Savannah, Georgia. Few details about the wreck are available at this time.*

Georgia State Patrol reports a distracted driver rear-ended another vehicle near the State Route 21 Exit on I-95 North (exit 109). Troopers did not indicate what caused the driver to be distracted. 

Six adults were transported to a local hospital “for observation,” and one child was airlifted from the scene with a traumatic head injury. The child, whose name and age have not been released, is reportedly in critical condition. 

Georgia State Patrol is still investigating the collision and has not yet released additional information. Troopers have not indicated whether charges will be filed. 

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, vehicle crashes in the United States are the leading cause of death for children ages 2 to 14 years. As cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 663 children ages 12 and younger died in motor vehicle accidents in 2015. In 2014, more than 121,000 children 12 years or younger were injured in vehicle accidents. 

In addition, a news report from NPR indicates 20 percent of children involved in serious car accidents between 2010 and 2014 were not properly restrained or were not wearing a seat belt. More than 40 percent of children who died in vehicle accidents from 2010 to 2014 were not properly restrained or were not wearing a seat belt.
