Serious Injuries Reported at Scene of Vehicle Crash in Savannah, Georgia

SAVANNAH, GA. – Serious injuries were reported from the scene of a two-vehicle crash January 1 in Savannah, Georgia, according to a news report online at wsav.com. Few details are available about the crash at this time.*

The crash occurred sometime in the afternoon on January 1. Two cars somehow collided at the intersection of MLK Boulevard and Gwinnett Street. It is not clear how the crash occurred or who was responsible. Serious injuries were reported to one person, and this person was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The victim has not been identified, nor has anyone else involved in the crash.

Drivers were encouraged to avoid the intersection while crews were on site investigating. The investigation is ongoing, and no additional information is available at this time. 

Savannah is located in Chatham County on Georgia’s eastern border. The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety reports that Chatham County is the site of a high number of traffic crashes annually. Its rate of crashes is also on the rise. 

In 2012, Chatham County was the site of more than 5,600 crashes. These crashes led to 1,388 injuries, as well as 20 fatalities. The numbers increased largely during the next several years. In 2016, the accident totals were triple those in 2012. Accidents in Chatham County in 2016 caused more than 3,700 injuries and 43 fatalities. 

Between 2012 and 2016, the largest amount of fatal vehicle accidents occurred in 2015 During 2015, 54 lost their lives in Chatham County traffic crashes. About 50 percent of those deadly crashes had involving factors of speed or alcohol on the part of one of the drivers.
