Driver Charged with DUI After Passenger Killed in Hall County, Georgia, Crash

HALL COUNTY, GA. – As reported online by 11alive.com, a driver has been criminally charged in connection with a vehicle crash that killed his passenger January 1 in Hall County, Georgia. Authorities believe the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash.* 

Reports indicate that 61-year-old John Brown, of Lake City, Georgia, was driving a 2001 Cadillac Deville southbound on Ga. 13 in Hall County around 3:50 p.m. on January 1. When Brown tried to make a left-hand turn onto the Interstate 985 South ramp, he drove in front of a 2009 Nissan 370Z traveling north on the highway.

The two vehicles then collided, and the force of impact sent the Cadillac into a 2017 Hyundai Elantra that was stopped on the I-985 ramp. The Hyundai then rolled and struck a 2010 GMC Acadia on the same ramp. 

The Nissan driver suffered minor injuries. He or she has not been identified, and officials did not indicate whether he or she required treatment. The Hyundai driver and the GMC driver were not hurt in the crash. Their names have not been released.  

Shari Brown, 56, of Lake City, was a passenger in the Cadillac was killed in the accident. John Brown was injured and went to Northeast Georgia Medical Center via ambulance He will likely be arrested upon release from the hospital, as he has been charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence, and failure to yield. It is not clear when he might be released or when he might appear in court.  

Georgia State Patrol is still reviewing the circumstances of the collision, and Troopers have not yet released additional details to the public.
