Officials Identify Victim of Fatal Crash on I-475 in Macon, Georgia

MACON, GA. – According to an online news report from, officials have identified the victim of a fatal four-vehicle crash that occurred  on Interstate 475 in Macon, Georgia. The crash involved two tractor-trailers and two passenger cars.*

The accident occurred on I-475 North, between Thomaston Road and Zebulon Road in Macon, a semi-truck became disabled in the center lane. The driver exited the semi-truck and attempted to make some repairs. A Chevrolet Silverado the came upon the scene and parked in front of the semi-truck. The Chevy driver asked to render assistance to the semi-truck driver. Shortly thereafter, another semi-truck traveling in the center lane of the interstate then hit the back of the disabled semi-truck. 

Upon impact, disabled truck crashed into the Chevy, as well as Honda Accord that was close by. The Bibb County Coroner reported that the driver of the first semi died at the scene. He has now been identified as 61-year-old George E. James, of Florence, South Carolina.  

Two additional people were injured during the crash and transported to the Medical Center, Navicent Health in Macon. Their names have not been released. They are reportedly in stable condition. 

Traffic on I-475 North was gridlocked after the crash, and drivers were rerouted from I-475 onto the exit ramp at Eisenhower Parkway, then to Interstate 75. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is still reviewing the crash and has not reported more information.

According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Bibb County has seen a major increase in traffic accidents in recent years. About 850 accidents occurred in the county in 2012, which caused 220 injuries and 17 deaths. By 2016, the number of accidents in the county had grown to 7,617, causing 2,144 injuries and 28 deaths.
