January 12, 2019

PEACH COUNTY, GA. – A woman was hit and killed by a vehicle on New Year’s Eve in Peach County, Georgia, according to an online news report from wgxa.tv. Little information about the accident has been reported at this time, but the victim of the crash has been identified.*

A woman was walking on Boy Scout Road in Peach County, toward Byron, and was struck by a vehicle. The Peach County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as 57-year-old Caryn Whitaker. The driver of the vehicle has not been identified.

The Peach County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and has not yet reported additional information to the public.

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has posted recommendations for pedestrian safety on its website. Pedestrians can help protect themselves throughout Georgia by following the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety’s advice. The office recommends walking on available sidewalks at all times, crossing every time at available crosswalks, walking  while facing oncoming traffic, using bright clothing or reflective gear at night, always following all traffic signals, and paying attention to turning cars.

The Office of Highway Safety also recommends that pedestrians attempt to make eye contact with oncoming drivers. This will assure pedestrians that drivers see them and are aware they are trying to cross the street. The office advises to stop before crossing the street and look left, right, then left again before walking into the roadway. In addition, children should never play in the street.
