January 09, 2019

ATLANTA, GA. – According to an online news report from cbs46.com, a pedestrian was killed in a New Year’s Day crash in Atlanta, Georgia. The circumstances of the accident are not completely clear at this time.*

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on January 1, a vehicle struck and killed a man on Interstate 85 North, near the intersection with Ga. 400 in Atlanta. Accounts of the events leading up to the accident differ. The driver of the vehicle, who has not been identified, said the man attempted to cross the interstate and jumped out in front of her car. However, a witness told police that the man was already lying on the road and rolling around before the woman hit him.

The victim has not been identified at this time. No charges have been filed against the driver, and authorities did not indicate whether charges would be filed in the future. Investigation is ongoing, and no additional information has yet been reported.

According to a report from the Atlanta Regional Commission, the number of traffic crashes involving pedestrians or bicyclists in the Atlanta, Georgia, metro area (made up of 20 counties in the state of Georgia) has largely increased over 10 years. In 2006, about 1,700 such collisions occurred in the metro. By 2015, that number rose to more than 2,500, representing a 53 percent increase.

In the same amount of time — 2006 to 2015 — 26 percent more pedestrians and bicyclists were killed or seriously injured in traffic collisions. The bicyclist and pedestrian program manager with the Atlanta Regional Commission, Byron Rushing, said the statistics show Georgia is “on the verge of a crisis.” At the current rate, 1,100 pedestrians will be killed in traffic crashes in Georgia prior to 2022.
