Drivers Killed, Passengers Injured in DeKalb County, Georgia, Head-On Crash

DEKALB COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from ajc.com, the drivers of two vehicles were killed, and two passengers were injured in a head-on vehicle crash in DeKalb County, Georgia.* 

A Ford Escape was traveling southbound on Moreland Avenue in DeKalb County. Near the intersection with Key Road, which borders southeast Atlanta, the Escape crossed over the centerline of the roadway and collided head-on with a northbound Nissan Altima. 

The driver of the Escape, 29-year-old Samuel Bailey, of McDonough, Georgia, sadly died at the scene. The driver of the Altima, 56-year-old Marvin Burley, of Atlanta, also died at the scene. Two passengers in the Escape were injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. They have not been identified, and the extent of their injuries is not known. 

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Authorities are still investigating the crash and have not reported additional information at this time. 

DeKalb County is a county in north-central Georgia. Approximately 753,000 people lived in DeKalb, and Decatur is the county seat. Interstates 20, 85, 285, and 675 are some of its major roadways. 

Vehicle accidents in DeKalb County have increased significantly in the last several years, according to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. More than 15,700 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, in 2012, which led to 3,775 injuries and 76 deaths. By 2016, accident figures rose to 39,383 total accidents, 10,158 injuries, and 80 fatalities. About 50 percent of the deadly vehicle crashes in DeKalb County in 2016 involved either alcohol (20 traffic accidents) or speeding (17 traffic accidents).
