Man Dies From Burn Injuries at Georgia Hospital After South Carolina Car Crash

AUGUSTA, GA. – According to an online news report from abcnews4.com, a man who crashed his vehicle in South Carolina December 27, 2018, died from burn injuries after being life flighted to a hospital in Augusta, Georgia.* 

On the morning of December 27, 2018, an unidentified man from New York was driving an SUV southbound along Interstate 95 in Colleton County, South Carolina. At mile marker 41, the SUV veered off the roadway and traveled down a 15-foot embankment. The vehicle then hit a large tree and caught on fire. 

The man’s 16-year-old daughter was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and she was able to escape. She attempted to free her father from the SUV, but he was trapped inside, and the driver’s door would not open. A passerby stopped and helped at the scene and was able to pull the man from the burning vehicle and extinguish the flames on his clothes. 

Emergency crews arrived and summoned a medical helicopter. The man was then airlifted to the Burn Center at Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta with second- and third-degree burns to 40 percent of his body. The man did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at Doctor’s Hospital. His name has not been released. 

The 16-year-old girl suffered multiple injuries and was transported to the Trauma Center at Trident Hospital in North Charleston, South Carolina. Her name has also not been released, and her current medical condition is not known. 

It is not yet clear what caused the man to lose control of the SUV and crash into a tree. South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident and has not released additional information at this time.
