North Carolina Pastor Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash on I-40

January 04, 2019

CONOVER, NC. – A North Carolina pastor was killed in a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 40, according to an online news report at hickoryrecord.com. Officials suspect the crash might have been caused by a medical emergency.*

59-year-old Scott Randolph Hammett Jr., of Clemmons, North Carolina, was driving a Honda eastbound on Interstate 40 in Conover, North Carolina. Near Exit 130, the Honda ran off the road and hit a light pole. No other vehicles were involved. Hammett and a dog in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, but officials are considering the possibility it was due to a medical emergency or health issue. Hammett was the senior pastor at the Clemmons First Baptist Church, a position he had held since 2016. He lived in Clemmons with his wife and was the father of three children.

According to an article from Forbes, one in five accidents involve single-vehicle roadway departures. More than 8,000 people in the United States die each year in single-vehicle rollover crashes. Many of these accidents involve alcohol or drugs, speeding, or medical emergencies. Sometimes, drivers suffer medical complications while driving, during which they become unconscious or unable to continue driving and crash their vehicles.

Inattentive driving is also a large factor in these types of crashes. People distracted behind the wheel are 75 percent more likely to be involved in fatal, single-vehicle accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Run-off-the-road accidents tend to occur more often with older drivers or teen drivers, though drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in fatal accidents starting at age 65.
