Mother, Infant Rescued from Creek After Wreck in North Georgia

January 04, 2019

LUMPKIN COUNTY, GA. – As reported online by 11alive.com, a mother and infant were rescued from a creek in Lumpkin County, Georgia, after a vehicle wreck December 28.*

At approximately 9 a.m. on December 28, a woman driving on Clay Creek Falls Road in Lumpkin County lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the creek. It is not yet clear how the crash occurred, and the woman has not been identified.

The woman had an infant child in the car with her at the time. Recuse crews acted quickly to save the two, using an extension ladder to access the vehicle. They first rescued the infant, then broke open the back window of the vehicle and pulled the woman out.

“The baby never cried and was calm the entire time,” said Emergency Services Deputy Chief David McWhorter. “The mother was very cold from the water and sore from whatever she initially hit before going into the creek.”

McWhorter went on to commend the actions of the rescue crew members.

“I’m very proud of them,” he said. “They followed the book, and it was a good outcome.”

Lumpkin County is located in the northern part of the state of Georgia and has an estimated population of approximately 31,500. Its major roadways include U.S. Route 19 and U.S. Route 129.

Vehicle accidents in Lumpkin County have more than doubled in the last several years, according to information compiled by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In 2012, a total of 407 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 147 injuries and seven deaths.

By 2016, the total number of accidents had grown to 921, which resulted in 281 injuries. However, the fatality rate actually decreased during this time. Five people were killed in the 2016 vehicle accidents in Lumpkin County.
