Two Vehicle Wrecks Block Traffic in Atlanta, Georgia
ATLANTA, GA. – Two vehicle wrecks resulted in blocked traffic in and around Atlanta, Georgia, on the morning of December 28, according to an online news report from 11alive.com. One of the wrecks involved at least nine vehicles.*
The first of the two wrecks occurred at Pryor Street in the downtown connector of Atlanta. At least nine vehicles were reportedly involved. It is not clear how the crash happened. The Georgia Department of Transportation reported no injuries from this wreck.
Another wreck occurred the same morning on Interstate 20 East and Glenwood in Atlanta. Several vehicles were involved — though the exact number was not reported — and injuries were reported from this wreck. The right two lanes of I-20 East were blocked after the wreck.
Both of the wrecks were likely caused in part by the rain present in the area at the time. A huge rainstorm hit Georgia December 28, increasing the risk of vehicle accidents on the state’s roadways.
The storm poured about 12 inches of rain on Louisiana and Mississippi and moved into other parts of the southern U.S. on December 28. The National Weather Service issued flash flood watches and warnings for many southern states, with the storm expected to hit Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
Georgia can expect about 5 inches of rain in the central and northern parts of the state. A rainstorm of this size will likely lead to increases in vehicle accidents on Georgia’s roadways, and drivers are encouraged to use caution. The storm is already blamed for one fatality in Louisiana, caused by a tree falling on a camper.
