Fire Destroys Home in Rome, Georgia; One Injured
NORTH ROME, GA. – A fire that ignited and destroyed a home in North Rome, Georgia, according to an online news report from northwestgeorgianews.com. One person was injured in the fire.*
The fire broke out at approximately 10:45 a.m. on December 27 at 226 Grady Avenue in North Rome. Rome-Floyd County Fire Investigator Mary Catherine Chewning said the fire started with a portable space heater in the home.
Resident Antoine Nichols, his girlfriend, and three children were able to escape the home. Nichols said the smell of smoke in the home caused him to investigate, and when he opened a door inside the home where he thought the children might be, flames burst toward him. He suffered burns to his hands and face, Chewning said. Nichols’s girlfriend, who was not identified, and the children were not injured.
Chewning said the fire appeared to have ignited with a space heater in a bedroom but added that space heaters were present in several rooms of the home.
“[The fire] was ruled accidental,” Chewning said. “They had a portable space heater plugged into an extension cord, which I believe was the primary source of ignition. We had a secondary ignition when the short traveled through the wiring of the structure into another room and set that room on fire.”
The home quickly became completely engulfed in flames. Fire Division Chief Dave Roberson said water supplies in the area off of Grady Avenue made the firefighting efforts more difficult. However, firefighters were able to ensure the fire did not spread to a nearby home.
