Sheriff’s Deputy Falls Asleep at Wheel, Causes Crash in Eatonton, Georgia

January 09, 2019

EATONTON, GA. – According to an online news report from, a Putnam County Sheriff’s deputy reportedly fell asleep at the wheel of his patrol cruiser and caused a vehicle accident in Eatonton, Georgia. The deputy suffered a concussion and was treated at a local hospital.*

The crash occurred in front of Eatonton City Hall on North Jefferson Avenue. Reports indicate 38-year-old Deputy Sgt. Justin Lee Brock was traveling north on North Jefferson Avenue in a 2016 Dodge Charger. After passing Eatonton City Hall, Brock traveled into oncoming traffic, striking a 2004 Mitsubishi Montero Sport that was waiting to turn left onto Willie Bailey Street.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, Willie Terry Welch, of Eatonton, was not injured. Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said Brock sustained a concussion and was transported to Putnam General Hospital in Eatonton. He was treated and later released.

“Brock was at fault,” Sills told reporters. “We believe he went to sleep.”

Georgia State Patrol and local police responded to the scene and investigated. Troopers reported that Brock “seemed to be very confused and appeared as if he had been out of it for a short period of time.” Brock could recall few details leading up to or after the accident, investigators reported. Reports indicated Welch could not have done anything to avoid the collision.

It is not yet clear whether any action will be taken against Brock for the crash. The investigation of the accident is ongoing, and no additional information has been reported at this time.
