Wreck Involving Two Trucks Blocks I-475 in Macon, Georgia

January 05, 2019

MACON, GA. – According to an online news story from wgxa.tv, a wreck involving two trucks was blocking part of Interstate 475 in Macon, Georgia. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.*

The crash occurred on I-475 South in Macon, Georgia. Two trucks somehow collided near Eisenhower Parkway, causing multiple lanes of the interstate to become blocked. It is not clear how the accident occurred, and no descriptive information was released about the trucks involved. No information was reported regarding injuries, and no one involved has been identified.

The Georgia Department of Transportation encouraged drivers in the area to try to find alternate routes, as delays were expected to last until almost midnight.

Truck accidents on interstates are prevalent in Georgia. In particular, the corridor of Interstate 285 between Interstate 75 and Interstate 85 is the site of frequent accidents involving large trucks and buses, according to local reports. When these accidents occur, due to their scale, several lanes of the interstate have to be shut down, and gridlock ensues throughout the area. Aside from the traffic backups, these accidents are known for causing serious injuries and fatalities. In 2016, 179 people died on Georgia roads in accidents that involved a bus or a large truck.

During the week of August 6, 2018, as part of a Large Truck and Bus Enforcement and Educational Initiative, law enforcement officers in Cobb County targeted dangerous drivers in the corridor. In total, the officers issued 932 citations. Almost 600 of these citations were for left lane violations. In Georgia, it is illegal for large trucks and buses to drive in the left lane. In addition to lane violations, 12 of the citations were for violations of the Georgia Hands-Free Law, and nine were for speeding.
