Huge Rainstorm Hits Georgia, Increasing Risk of Car Accidents

January 05, 2019

GEORGIA – A huge rainstorm hit Georgia increasing the risk of vehicle accidents on the state’s roadways, according to an online news story from 660citynews.com.*

The storm poured about 12 inches of rain on Louisiana and Mississippi and moved into other parts of the southern U.S. The National Weather Service issued flash flood watches and warnings for many southern states, with the storm expected to hit Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

Georgia can expect about 5 inches of rain in the central and northern parts of the state. A rainstorm of this size will likely lead to increases in vehicle accidents on Georgia’s roadways, and drivers are encouraged to use caution. The storm is already blamed for one fatality in Louisiana, caused by a tree falling on a camper.

The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates more than 5.8 million crashes occur every year nationwide, with weather conditions accounting for approximately 21 percent of those crashes. Of weather-related crashes, 73 percent are attributed to wet pavement. While people often think of winter as the most hazardous driving season, the Department of Transportation found snow and sleet to be factors in 18 percent of yearly car crashes, compared to 46 percent of crashes occurring during rainfall.

Not only does rain create slick roadways, it also affects driver visibility, vehicle performance (i.e. stability and traction), and traffic flow, all of which lead to a heightened risk of accidents. Weather-related automobile crashes result in more than 418,000 injuries and close to 5,400 fatalities annually.
