Truck Crashes into Church in Columbus, Georgia

January 05, 2019

COLUMBUS, GA. – According to an online news report from, a truck crashed into a church building in Columbus, Georgia. Upon preliminary investigation, police believe the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.*

A lawn care truck crashed into a pillar on the outside of the Fourth Street Baptist Church in Columbus. Upon impact, the pillar gave way, and the entire awning of the church collapsed. No one was under the awning at the time, and no serious injuries were reported. The church’s exterior will require significant repair, and church officials do not yet have a timeline on those repairs.

The driver of the truck, who has not been identified, reportedly did not pass a drug screening and was taken into police custody. Police believe he was impaired at the time of the crash. No information was provided about the lawn care company for which the driver worked. Investigation into the accident is ongoing.

Interestingly, a very similar event occurred just a few days earlier in another city named Columbus. On the morning of December 23, members of the Crossroads United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio, were attending a Sunday service, when a car crashed through one of the church’s walls. About 100 members were inside the church that day for a Christmas performance and were singing a hymn, when the car came flying through and shattered a stained glass window.

The collision and glass explosion caused six people to suffer cuts and other injuries. They were all transported to a local hospital for treatment. The victims and the driver of the car have not been identified. It does not appear anyone suffered life-threatening injuries. Police do not yet know what caused the car to crash into the church.
