Georgia Inmate Killed by Garbage Truck While Performing Sanitation Work

CARTERSVILLE, GA. – According to an online news report from, a Georgia inmate was struck and killed by a garbage truck December 26 while he was performing sanitation work in Cartersville, Georgia. Few details have been released about the crash at this time.*

It is not clear what time the accident occurred, but officials estimate it was sometime after lunch on December 26. The Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed 43-year-old Lester Robert Baker, an inmate with the Floyd County Prison, was killed in a collision involving a garbage truck. Baker was working with the Cartersville Sanitation Department and became pinned between a garbage truck and a utility pole on Jones Street. It appears the truck reversed into him. 

Baker was performing the work after volunteering to help with sanitation efforts the day after Christmas. State records indicate Baker was incarcerated at Floyd County on burglary charges, among others. 

The exact cause of the crash is not yet known. Georgia State Patrol is investigating and has not yet released additional information. 

According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 34,000 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States in 2016. These accidents resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States. 

Georgia’s 2016 fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were above the national ranges. The state’s individual data shows 15.1 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.29 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
