Wreck Involving Police Car Shuts Down I-20 in DeKalb County, Georgia
DEKALB COUNTY, GA. – A wreck involving a police car shut down Interstate 20 West in DeKalb County the day after Christmas, according to an online news report from gwinnettdailypost.com.
The wreck occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on December 26, near Flat Shoals Road on I-20 West. A police officer had conducted a traffic stop and was in his patrol cruiser while the vehicle he pulled over was being loaded onto a tow truck. A westbound Chevrolet Impala crashed into the guardrail near the officer’s car then hit the patrol car and the other vehicle that was being lifted onto the tow truck.
The officer sustained minor injuries and was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. He has not been identified but reportedly worked for the motor compliance division of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. The male driver of the Impala and a female passenger, also not identified, were injured and also taken to Grady Memorial. Reports indicate they were both not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Three children were riding in the back of the Impala — a 6-year-old girl, a 4-year-old girl, and a 1-year-old girl — and were taken the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. The two older girls sustained unknown injuries, but the 1-year-old girl did not appear to have any injuries and was transported as a precaution. Reports indicate the children were in booster seats but were not properly restrained.
The driver of the tow truck and a passenger in the truck sustained minor injuries and were also transported to a nearby hospital. Authorities do not yet know what caused the Impala driver to crash into the guardrail. Traffic on I-20 West was completely blocked for several hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene.
