Officers Respond to Fatal Wreck on Hwy 27 in Early County, Georgia

EARLY COUNTY, GA. – As reported online by, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene of a fatal wreck on Highway 27 in Early County, Georgia.* 

The crash occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on December 26. Reports indicate two vehicles collided on Highway 27 in Early County. One of the vehicles was a passenger car, and the other was a side-by-side Honda ATV. The cause of the crash is not yet clear, but officials reported at least one person died in the collision. The victim has not been identified. 

Georgia State Patrol, the Early County Sheriff’s Office, and the Miller County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. The roadway was closed for about two hours while crews investigated and cleared the wreckage. No additional information about the accident has been reported at this time. 

Early County is located in the southwest corner of the state of Georgia. It has an estimated population of approximately 10,300, and its major roadways include U.S. Route 27, U.S. Route 84, State Route 1, State Route 200, and State Route 370. 

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, vehicle accidents in Early County have climbed in the last several years. In 2012, a total of 116 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 35 injuries and three deaths. Those numbers rose during the next few years, and the number of fatal accidents jumped significantly in 2015. A total of 244 accidents occurred in Early County in 2015, leading to 71 injuries and eight deaths. 

During a five-year period between 2012 and 2016, 2015 saw the highest number of fatal vehicle accidents in Early County. During all five years, one or two of the fatal accidents involved either alcohol or speeding.
