Officials Identify Victim of Floyd County, Georgia, Single-Vehicle Wreck

FLOYD COUNTY, GA. – Officials have identified the victim of a single-vehicle accident on Christmas Day in Floyd County, Georgia, according to an online news report from northwestgeorgianews.com. The cause of the crash has still not been determined.*

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on December 25, 64-year-old Billy Joe Rittenhouse, of Floyd County, was driving a pickup truck northbound on Ga. 101/Rockmart Highway in Floyd County. Near Windmill Drive, Rittenhouse’s truck somehow ran off the road and crashed between Silver Creek and Aragon. It is not yet clear what caused the crash.

According to the Floyd County Coroner’s Office, Rittenhouse was transported to Floyd Medical Center and was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma. It does not appear anyone else was in the truck at the time of the crash, and no other vehicles were involved. Authorities are still investigating the crash and have not reported further details at this time. 

Floyd County is located in the northwestern portion of the state of Georgia. It has a population of approximately 97,600, and its major roadways include U.S. Route 27, U.S. Route 411, State Route 1, State Route 100, and State Route 293. 

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, vehicle accidents in Floyd County have climbed unsteadily in the last several years. In 2012, a total of 3,300 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 826 injuries and 16 deaths. Those numbers fell slightly during the next few years and rose again in 2015. A total of 3,542 accidents occurred in Floyd County in 2015, leading to 894 injuries and 14 deaths. 

During a five-year period between 2012 and 2016, the highest number of fatal vehicle accidents in Floyd County occurred in 2016, when 18 people died in motor vehicle crashes.
