Police Arrest Driver Who Hit Teenage Pedestrian in Griffin, Georgia

January 04, 2019

GRIFFIN, GA. – According to an online news report from ajc.com, police have arrested a man suspected to be the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash in Griffin, Georgia, on December 19. The man reportedly hit a 15-year-old pedestrian and fled the scene.*

The collision occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on December 19 on Northside Drive, near Ridgeview Drive in Griffin. There are no sidewalks in the stretch of road, and 15-year-old Marquis Gunn, of Griffin, was walking east in the westbound lane. A vehicle struck Gunn, and the driver fled the scene.

Gunn was transported to WellStar Atlanta Medical Center with serious injuries. He has since been released but is reportedly still recovering from his injuries.

A week after the accident, 45-year-old Daryl Lenear Ogletree turned himself in for the crime and was placed in police custody. Ogletree is currently being held at the Spalding County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license.

According to an article from NPR, pedestrian fatalities in the United States are a significant problem. In 2017, nearly 6,000 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in the U.S., a number that represents a 25-year high for the second year in a row. Pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. Two possible explanations for the year-over-year increases are more vehicles on the road due to lower gas prices and high instances of distracted driving.

Pedestrian fatalities rose in 2017 in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Five states — California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Arizona — carried 30 percent of the U.S. population in 2017 but made up 43 percent of the pedestrian deaths that year.
