Georgia State Patrol Releases Holiday Accident Figures
GEORGIA – According to an online news report from wtoc.com, the Georgia State Patrol has released preliminary figures regarding traffic accidents in the state during the holiday travel period.
This travel period ran from Friday, December 21, to Wednesday, December 26. During the time span, Troopers say more than two dozen people were killed on Georgia roads. Because law enforcement officers in the state are gearing up for the deadliest time of year still to come (New Year’s Eve), they did not have a lot of time to crunch the Christmas traffic numbers.
The numbers released so far show a total of 25 people died in vehicle accidents in Georgia during the five-day traveling period. This is double the number of crashes that occurred during the same time in 2017. Since Christmas fell on a Tuesday this year, which extended the usual traveling time around the holiday, putting more cars on the road for a longer period of time. In addition, Troopers saw more problems on the roads with dangerous driving.
“We’re seeing an increase in speeders and high speeds,” said Post Commander Sgt. Chris Rodewolt. “We’re seeing an increase in drinking and driving, people getting on the road after going to Christmas parties with too much alcohol in their systems.”
Troopers are planning to continue heavy patrol into the New Year, particularly on New Year’s Eve, to catch people drinking and driving. Sgt. Rodewolt encouraged everyone in the state to make plans for safe rides prior to heading out on New Year’s Eve.
