South Carolina Sheriff’s Deputy Injured in Car Accident

January 02, 2019

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC. – A deputy with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department in South Carolina was injured in a car accident on December 28, according to an online news report from wistv.com.*

On the evening of December 28, an unidentified Richland County Sheriff’s deputy was responding to a call of shots fired and was traveling west on Interstate 24. Near Harbison Boulevard, the deputy crashed into the back of a 2015 Mercedes.

The deputy and an occupant of the Mercedes were injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their injuries are reportedly non-life threatening. The accident caused two lanes of I-24 West to be closed while crews investigated and cleared the scene. No additional information has been reported at this time.

According to a report by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, during the five-year period between 2010 and 2014, 78 police officers in the United States died in vehicle crashes while responding to a call for service. More than half of these deaths — 53 percent — were situations in which officers were responding to calls for help from another officer and crashed while traveling to the scene.

The second-most frequent scenario in these crash-related officer deaths was officers responding to reports of traffic accidents. Two of the cases involved officers responding to assist EMS personnel who had called for help. Forty-five of the 78 cases (or 58 percent) were single-vehicle accidents, involving only the police cruiser. Four of the crashes involved two officers colliding with each other while driving to a service call. About 20 percent of the officers killed in vehicle accidents were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crashes.
