Man Struck, Killed by Vehicle in Atlanta, Georgia

January 05, 2019

ATLANTA, GA. – A man was struck and killed by a vehicle on a street in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 29, according to an online news report from ajc.com. The victim has not been identified at this time.*

The accident occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. on December 29. Atlanta Police Department spokesperson Officer Jarius Daugherty said a man was walking across Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in Atlanta and was struck by a vehicle in the 2080 block of the road. The victim died at the scene. His name has not publicly been released.

The driver of the vehicle, who has not been identified, stayed at the scene and spoke to police. Police said the victim was not walking inside a crosswalk but did not indicate whether a crosswalk was available in the area. Authorities do not expect charges to be filed against the driver.

Investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and no additional information has yet been reported.

The Atlanta Regional Commission reports that the number of collisions involving pedestrians and bicyclists in the Atlanta metro area (which includes 20 counties in Georgia) has risen dramatically in about 10 years. In 2006, about 1,700 such collisions occurred in the metro, and by 2015, that number rose to more than 2,500. That represents a 53 percent increase.

During the same time period — 2006 to 2015 — the number of pedestrians and bicyclists who were killed or seriously injured in traffic collisions increased by 26 percent. Byron Rushing, bicyclist and pedestrian program manager with the Atlanta Regional Commission, says these figures show the state is “on the verge of a crisis.” If the trend continues, another 1,100 pedestrians across Georgia will die in traffic crashes before 2022.
